Uganda Workshop 2009

From July 30 to July 31 the Uganda workshop on „The Contribution of Victim Participation in Transitional Justice Processes“was held in Luwero town. 34 participants from Ugandan non-governmental organisations as well as from Makerere University, Gulu University, Philipps-University Marburg and Augsburg University came together to discuss the circumstances, the potential and the challenges of victim participation in Uganda.

Alena Hartwig (Philipps-University Marburg) gave a presentation on the overall project and the case of victim participation in Cambodia. Many questions were asked on the Cambodian transitional justice process, ranging from reparations to traditional rituals of reconciliation. Then the honourable Prof. Dan Nabudere with his analysis of victimhood in Uganda inspired a lively discussion among the participants.

After presentations by some of the participants on their daily work as NGOs, the participants split up into four working groups tackling general issues such as who is a victim and what victim participation could look like in the different stages of a transitional justice process. The results were shared on the second day, whereafter the way forward was discussed in the plenary. Every participant pitched in ideas on how to proceed and concrete plans were announced for different projects in Uganda and Germany.

These are some impressions of the workshop held in Luwero in July 2009.
